Global Impact Month: Baghdad children come to Esher on a very special “exchange” visit
Esher’s Cornerstone the Church is welcoming all visitors to join them for a memorable visit from Canon Andrew White, the ‘Vicar of Baghdad’, on Sunday morning (15th August 2010) as its “Global Impact Month” continues throughout August.
Canon Andrew – who is Chaplain at St George’s Church in Baghdad, Iraq – is guest speaker at the Sandown Park based church’s morning service, which takes place at 10.30am in the Gold Cup Suite. A regular visitor to Cornerstone whenever he is in the country, this time he’ll be bringing along some very special guests.
A group of children from Canon Andrew’s Baghdad congregation will get the unique opportunity to exchange their lives in war-torn Iraq for the peace of the Surrey countryside, if only for a short time.
“No matter what your own beliefs may be, I encourage anyone to come along and hear the fascinating things this great man of faith, and genuine world figure, has to say,” said Founder and Senior Pastor of Cornerstone the Church, Chris Demetriou. “His real life stories are fundamentally moving and inspirational, despite the incredibly difficult conditions under which he continues to work for peace and reconciliation in Iraq and throughout the Middle East. He is a great friend and an encouragement to us all. It will be a particular privilege to welcome the children along with Canon Andrew and to learn more about their lives and faith, growing up in one of the world’s most dangerous cities.”
Canon Andrew, who has to be escorted to his Baghdad church services by a convoy of armed soldiers, is also Chaplain to the Allied Forces in Iraq, President and CEO of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, and a major political figure in the region. He has visited the Esher-based church on many occasions and regularly cites Cornerstone as one of his favourite churches in the world, because of its dynamic and uplifting approach to the Christian faith!
Cornerstone’s “Global Impact Month” kicked off on Sunday 1st August with internationally renowned speaker, Christopher Alam, addressing the gathered congregation. It continues on Sunday 22nd with a visit from Psalmody International’s founder and leader, Tom Inglis.
