Cases of TB in Surrey treble in eight years

Surrey has one of the highest rates of Tuberculosis in the south east.

It is second only to Berkshire East in figures which do not include London.

The Health Protection Agency is worried that sufferers are not necessarily helping themselves.

There were 84 cases of TB in Surrey in 2010, that is almost triple the number recorded in 2002.

Compare that to Hampshire, where there was just one recorded case.

Now the HPA is concerned because it says people are not getting properly treated for the infection.

It is easily beaten with a six-month course of antibiotics, but 1-in-25 patients fails to complete the full treatment.

  • Fever and night sweats

  • Persistent cough

  • Losing weight

  • Blood in your phlegm or spit
