Shots let go of player who's "not been happy and motivated"

12:40am 27th January 2012.

Midfielder Luke Guttridge has left the club and has had his contract terminated by mutual consent. The 29 year old joined the club in the summer of 2010, and made 80 appearances netting 13 goals.

Manager Dean Holdsworth said, “Luke and I had a frank conversation and I have detected that he has not been a happy and motivated player recently. We shared our views honestly and agreed that the most important thing is what is right for Aldershot Town Football Club and Luke.

“Luke is able to move on to a new challenge in his life and his departure provides me with the opportunity to bring another player in for the future. It is about focussing on the team at the moment and I want a positive squad throughout. It was a tough decision but an easy one because we both wanted the same thing.

“Luke’s contract would have expired in the summer and I feel that he would have moved on then. He has been a good player for me and I thank him for his services to the club and wish him well in his career.”

Luke has amassed over 400 appearances in a career that has also seen service with Cambridge United, Southend United and Northampton Town.

The Devon born player said, “I have mixed feelings. It is exciting what is out there in front of me and I am looking for a challenge that suits me but it was emotional saying goodbye to the lads.

“I have enjoyed my time at Aldershot Town. We experienced an excellent cup run in the Carling Cup and that will remain with me forever, especially the West Ham United match and to play Manchester United too.  I scored some good goals during my time too and I wish the club all the best for the future.”

It's also confirmed that defender Chris Doig has left the club, after his short term agreement came to an end.

Menawhile,  an agreement has been made with Oxford United which sees midfielder Josh Payne remaining at the club for the rest of the season. Dean Holdsworth added, “Josh has been champing at the bit to play for the club and give everything that he can and I am looking forward to him stepping into that role.”
