Pensioners jailed for smuggling drugs
2:07pm 9th March 2010.
A pensioner's been sentenced at Guildford Crown Court for smuggling drugs into a Surrey jail.
Robert White, who's from Chiselhurst Road in Orpington, admitted taking 14 grammes of heroin into Highdown Prison during December last year.
The 68 year old has been sentenced to two years behind bars.
Surrey Police was called to HMP Highdown after White was seen by prison officers to pass something to a prisoner he was visiting.
Dave Evans, who investigated the offence, said: "White thought he was above the law and he would get away with smuggling drugs into one of Her Majesty's prisons.
"I hope his sentence sends a clear message to anyone thinking of smuggling or dealing drugs that Surrey Police will not tolerate drug abuse and we are cracking down hard on the illegal use and supply of drugs.
"Working with HMP service we were able to bring White to justice and the sentence reflects the seriousness Surrey Police and the courts are taking against those who choose to deal or use drugs. I hope White's sentence reassures the community that we will continue to target drug users and dealers and prosecute them."
