Special Leader for Woking

3:43pm 10th March 2010.

It's as you were for those leading Woking.

Borough Councillors have decided to continue with a third of the council up for us to vote for every year, with a break every fourth year.

At a Special Meeting, it was decided a special leader will be elected rather than a mayor, that person will have powers to make decisions and chose advisors.

Seventeen Councillors voted to retain the current electoral arrangements against 16 who voted in support of elections every four years.  As two-thirds of Councillors would need to have voted against elections by thirds to bring about a change, the electoral arrangements will remain the same.

Speaking about the Strong Leader model, Cllr John Kingsbury, Woking Borough Council's Leader of the Executive, said: "This model gives the elected leader powers to make decisions and appoint Executive Members, enabling them to drive forward positive change and improvement."
