Council defends Haslemere tip closure

Surrey bosses are defending controversial plans to close a tip in Haslemere.
Hundreds of people have signed a petition against the closure of the site at St. Christopher's Green.
But the council says - at 80 thousand pounds a year it's just too expensive to run.
And Cabinet member for the environment, Councillor Lyn Hack says it's not environmentally friendly as all the rubbish goes to landfill: “That means 600 tonnes of waste every year going to landfill.
“We have a policy of promoting reduction and re-use and recycling and we have a 70 per cent recycling figure and this is a zero per cent recycling figure.”
All green waste will continue to be collected at the site.
